Murray State University teacher preparation program receives national accreditation


Murray State University’s College of Education and Human Services has received seven years of initial accreditation through the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). The University was recently notified of this decision to grant accreditation with no areas for improvement.


In an email to college and University constituents, College of Education and Human Services Dean David Whaley stated, “Please note that this is the very highest outcome possible. It is excellent news.”


According to the Accreditation Action Report received by the institution, “Accreditation is granted at the initial teacher preparation level. This accreditation status is effective

between spring 2017 and spring 2024. The next onsite visit will take place in fall 2023.”


“This is a review that has taken well over the past year and involved so many in this college and around this University,” Whaley continued. “Certainly, credit is due to Dr. Jacqueline Hansen, department chair and college assessment director; Dr. Robert Lyons, assistant dean and co-CAEP coordinator; Dr. Alesa Walker, director of Teacher Education Services; and all of our college community.”


CAEP was formed in 2010 through the combination of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC). Murray State was one of the first institutions to be accredited by NCATE in 1954, the year this nongovernmental, nonprofit accrediting body was founded. The University maintained this accreditation throughout the lifespan of NCATE.


CAEP was fully operationalized as the sole accrediting body for educator preparation providers beginning July 1, 2013 and was officially recognized by the Council for Higher

Education Accreditation in 2014. CAEP accreditation standards were fully implemented as of 2016. As such, NCATE and TEAC legacy standards are no longer used for accreditation purposes.


As explained in its mission statement, “CAEP advances excellent educator preparation through evidence-based accreditation that assures quality and supports continuous improvement to strengthen P-12 student learning.”


This accreditation certifies that Murray State meets rigorous national standards for educator preparation and demonstrates excellence in the areas of content and pedagogy, clinical experiences, selectivity, program impact and capacity for continuous improvement.


In addition to pre-visit preparations and post-visit follow-ups, Murray State underwent an onsite visit by a CAEP accreditation team November 13-15, 2016.


Though the College of Education and Human Services was directly credited for this accreditation accomplishment in the CAEP report, Whaley confirmed that “it truly was a University-wide effort and University-wide success.”


Several faculty and staff of other colleges with initial certification programs aided in the process. This includes the Arthur J. Bauernfeind College of Business, the College of Humanities and Fine Arts, the Hutson School of Agriculture and the Jesse D. Jones College of Science, Engineering and Technology. Many individuals, including student teachers, recent alumni and cooperating teachers, also participated in the institution’s onsite visit.
